Civil wedding in Mauritius

Age of Marriage

The age at which a person can civilly marry is 18 years. A minor over 16 and under 18 can contract civil marriage with the consent of his/her parents.

If one of the parents is dead, the other parent may consent to the marriage on production to the Civil Status Officer, the relevant proof of the death of the other spouse.

Matrimonial Regimes

There are 3 types of matrimonial regimes:

1. The system of legal community of goods and property

2. The system of legal separation of goods

3. A marriage settlement embodied in a notarial deed

Marriage of two non-citizens

Application for a certificate of non-citizen/non-resident should reach us via mail at least one month before the intended date of marriage.

The civil marriage may be celebrated after one day of publication. On their arrival in Mauritius the parties should call on the Registrar of Civil Status in Port Louis for verification of original documents.

Car transfers and a Coordinator on the day are included in our Civil Wedding Packages.

Documents to be forwarded to us

(i) Two photocopies of each birth certificate drawn up in English/French. The date of issue of the birth certificate must not be more than 3 months.

(ii) Two photocopies of each passport (the 1st three pages only).

(iii) Relevant documents in respect of divorce, widow/widower or change of name.

(iv) In addition to above documents, a French national should produce a “Certificat de capacité de mariage”.

(v) A certificate of non_citizen and non-resident is issued to the parties in Mauritius after verification of their documents whose date of issue shall not be more than 3 months.

(vi) The marriage is celebrated in the office or in any private premises by the Civil Status Officer of the locality where the parties will reside after a publication of banns of 24 hours.

(vii) For Weddings during week days at the Civil Status Office, Couple can choose any time between 09h00 to 16h00. For Weddings in a private venue during week days it starts as from 16h00. For Weddings during Weekend any time upon confirmation from Civil Officer with additional Rs 500 for his transport.

(viii) However, where any party cannot produce any civil status document, he may instead produce an affidavit sworn in his country of residence or in such form as the Registrar of Civil Status may approve.

(ix) As regards fees for wedding held in the office, no payment is required. If it is celebrated in the hotel or any private premises, a payment of Rs 5000- should be made at the Central Civil Status Office and Rs 500 for the transport of the officer.

Civil marriage of a non-citizen to a citizen of Mauritius

Documents to be produced at the time of publication:

NON CITIZEN

1. Passport (original) + 4 photocopies of photograph page and 4 photocopies of page of last arrival in Mauritius.

2. Birth Certificate issued within the last three (3) months + 1 photocopy.

3. Divorce papers/Previous marriage certificate with annotation of divorce (issued within the last three (3) months) (if applicable) + 1 photocopy Death and marriage certificates (if applicable) (issued within the last three (3) months) + 1 photocopy.

4. Certificate of character/morality from country of residence (issued within the last three (3) months) + 1 photocopy.

5. Work/Resident permit (applicable to expatriates) + 3 photocopies.

6. Proof of financial means;(contract of employment or recent bank statement or recent salary slip – last 3 months) + 1 photocopy.

7. Medical certificate attesting that applicant party does not suffer from any infectious or contagious disease;(from a medical officer practicing in Mauritius).

8. Affidavit sworn before the Supreme Court of Mauritius against payment of Rs 150 only (form available free of charge at the Central Civil Status office, Port Louis).

9. “Certificat de capacité à mariage” for French national (form available at the French Embassy, St. Georges Street, Port Louis).

10. A valid marriage visa issued by Passport and Immigration Office (PIO). · The applicants should have resided in Mauritius for a continuous period of seven (7) days immediately preceding the day of publication of marriage. · The non-citizen should be holder of a valid marriage visa issued by the Immigration Office.

Civil marriage between a non-citizen and a citizen shall take place at the Central Civil Status Office, Port Louis after a minimum period of ten (10) days as from the day of publication.

 

MAURITIAN CITIZEN

1. Birth Certificate issued within the last three (3) months.

2. National Identity Card.

3. Death and Marriage certificates issued within the last three months (if applicable).

4. Marriage certificate with annotation of divorce issued within the last three months (if applicable).

5. Where any party cannot produce (a) less than three months, he/she may instead produce an affidavit Sworn before the Supreme Court of Mauritius against payment of Rs 150 only (form available free of charge at the Central Civil Status office, Port Louis).

6. A woman willing to contract a second marriage before the expiry of 300 days since the dissolution of her first marriage by divorce or death must produce a medical certificate of non-pregnancy.

(viii) As regards fees for wedding held in the office, no payment is required. If it is celebrated in the hotel or any private premises, a payment of Rs 5000 will be required.

° Private Photoshoot with a minibook of 20 pages (21×21) and an USB key with all photos.

° Filming with a drone if weather allows. The video will be given to the Couple on a USB key.

° Decoration of the Ceremony Venue with Wedding Arch , floral, lanterns and candle arrangements.

° Music of your choice played during the ceremony.
